RFID metal tags help limit surgical errors
Trang chủ » News » Medical news » RFID metal tags help limit surgical errors

To overcome surgical errors scientists have come up with a new tool, which is an RFID metal tag. The recovery of forgotten surgical instruments in the patient’s body has left tragic consequences, while the instruments to overcome this disadvantage are still manual, so the surgical progress is still slow and prone to errors. Statistics show that, during surgery, doctors must use up to 250 different instruments to collect, grasp, cut, sew, suck wounds …

Yellow (very small) metal tags are attached to the surgical instrument

A new RFID tracking system has been developed by Wyss Institute, in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital (USA), to embed RFID chips into metal surgical tools. This smart RFID metal tag can withstand high temperatures, both for disinfecting tools and not for changing the shape and size of tools. The vapor deposition process is used to place dielectric materials directly on the surface of the tool metal, then a molded conductive antenna including embedded RFID chips. Next comes biocompatible sealants. An intuitive screen in the operating room will list the number of surgical instruments inserted and the number when leaving the room, from which to know whether or not any instruments are left in the patient’s body. The RFID technology is basically the same, based on the principle of combining the IC with an antenna in a “tag” tag, then responds to a signal from a reader or scanner that signals it and can store information. The small size of RFID tag is very suitable for medical use. RFID has been used for devices such as beds, wheelchairs and infusion pumps, helping to determine location and quantity when storing, using, preventing theft, tracking patients and managing drugs. Now continue to be improved to monitor surgical instruments.
